Full Description:
ADVANCED DEMURRAGE WORKSHOP
19/20 May - Hotel de la Paix, Geneva, Switzerland
Asdem is pleased to present this two-day workshop in conjunction with Jeremy Davies, Senior Partner at international shipping lawyers, Davies Johnson & Co. Jeremy has conducted extremely successful workshop sessions at Asdem’s last five Tanker Demurrage Conferences. They have always received the highest approval rating from delegates and the only complaint has been that there is never enough time to debate all the points raised by his thought-provoking case studies.
Jeremy Davies and Roger Sepkes, Managing Director of Asdem, have combined their many years’ experience of handling claims and resolving disputes to examine a number of interesting issues that have been highlighted by recent court decisions. The workshop will include several case studies and a mock arbitration. It will also involve full participation by the delegates who can bring with them any current problems they would like to discuss. The programme is specifically designed for demurrage analysts, claims handlers and lawyers who already have a reasonable level of experience and may possibly have previously attended Asdem’s laytime and demurrage training seminars and conferences.

The two days allows enough time to cover a range of contentious demurrage claims and should provide delegates with a greater awareness of many aspects of this important subject. In demurrage negotiations, the person with the greatest knowledge and experience will inevitably be best placed to find opportunities for saving money.

We have arranged a cocktail reception at the end of the first day which will provide a further opportunity for establishing useful business contacts among the delegates. The workshop will be limited to a maximum of twenty-four delegates.

THE SPEAKERS

Jeremy Davies, Senior Partner, Davies Johnson & Co., qualified as a solicitor in 1981. Whilst doing articles at Ince & Co he started dealing with demurrage cases in the oil trading industry. He then spent 4 years working for Assuranceforeningen Gard in Norway. While at Gard he was largely responsible for producing the first international version of Gard’s highly respected P&I Handbook. On returning to the UK in 1985, he worked for Sinclair Roche & Temperley for 3 years, during which time he was involved in a number of High Court cases and arbitrations relevant to tanker demurrage, in particular the “Fjordaas”. In 1990 he started the firm of Davies Grant & Horton, to which his current firm of Davies Johnson & Co is a successor practice. The firm specialises in shipping and international trade disputes and Jeremy counts a number of oil companies and oil traders amongst his clients. He now divides his time between Davies Johnson’s offices in the UK and Geneva.

Roger Sepkes, Managing Director of Asdem Ltd., has had a wide-ranging career during 40 years in the oil industry, initially in distribution, shipping and refining with Petrofina in London and Brussels. Subsequently, he was a director of an independent storage company and then spent many years as an oil trader. He frequently acts as an arbitrator in trading and shipping disputes, under both Asdem and LMAA terms. He set up Asdem at the suggestion of several oil trading companies in 1988. Asdem is an independent consultancy that specialises in the recovery of claims and the settlement of disputes arising from charter parties and oil trading contracts.
