The Middle East appears to be on the brink of an explosion of derivatives activity. There are significant plans in place to launch derivatives exchanges in Abu Dhabi (ADX due to launch stock and index futures in 2010 will the help of NYSE Euronext), Qatar (another NYSE Euronext assisted venture), Bahrain (Financial Technologies India announced the launch of BFX in Jan 09 with the approval of the Central Bank of Bahrain to launch a range of products), Kuwait (working with NASDAQ OMX to launch a derivatives exchange) and Egypt (launch now slatted as 2011).... all hoping to catch-up with the pioneering exchanges launched in Dubai in the last few years.

Dubai, often praised for its strong markets, with stringent regulation and inherent strength and appetite for growth, has been poised to be one of the major platforms for derivatives trading in the world and a hub for the Middle East Region, but only time will tell if this position will remain.

In both listed and OTC markets, there is a need for product development and innovation to catering for the unique demands of this region. As regulators steadily introduce changes that open the Middle Eastern derivatives market to a wider range of investors and the permitted products, who will be positioned to develop the opportunities which will undoubtedly be presented?
